Forma
As you approach the Marina at Malahide you cannot help feel a visit to the Cruzzo Restaurant is going to be special. In spite of its solid and rather austere exterior, especially by daylight, once inside, the building is remarkably transparent. However much reworking and re-planning of the layout has taken place by the origional owning syndicate of four.
They decided to retain the services of Oppemann Associates to carry out the interior design and oversee its subsequent fit out. Whilst constrained by the positioning of certain already fixed and built items such as the lift and the two access bridges they instinctively felt that the original planned layout, which meant the entrance being on the mainland', bar at the higher level and dining area below had to be virtually turned upside down and the other way around.
Consequently the final layout now has the entry at the lower level and over the water by way of the small bridge. Inside is taken up with a Cocktail Bar with grand piano, seating and a balcony looking out over the boats. From here a feature staircase, which tapers towards the top to heighten the perspective, leads to the upper level, which is reserved for dining and the kitchens.
On entry therefore the ground floor opens up into two or three distinct areas with a variety of different seating styles - settees in red & white leather, soft upholstered stools and large glass centred coffee tables, red and navy metal bar type stools around column drinks shelves.
The areas are defined by a curved walkway in limestone tiles with carpet or black slate underground heated tiles either side and the dominating red carpeted staircase. Light blue inverted columns trimmed with brushed aluminum and tapering towards the ground, reminiscent of the Etruscans, punctuate the space.
Areas of strong, bold colour and a dark wooden feature shelf wall provide interest and contrast against the overall warm red and blue background.
The area to the bar front is kept open, save for the piano, allowing views of and access to the balcony which serves as the outdoor heated smoking area with its plants in large blue glazed pots and statues of diving mermaids.
This also represents one of the all too few places in this thriving seaside village you can actually have a drink whilst seeing and enjoying such environs.
